Directions
Combine flour, granulated sugar, brown sugar, baking powder, and salt in a large bowl.
(You can use an electric mixer at a slow speed for mixing.)
Add shortening and butter; cut in with a pastry blender, two forks, or even just use your hands until the mixture resembles coarse cornmeal.
Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator. This mixture also freezes well.
Thanks to this basic cookie dough recipe, you can turn everyday ingredients into homemade cookies. Bake some right away, then pop the extra dough in the freezer for later.
How to bake cookies
Roll tablespoons of the cookie dough into walnut-sized balls. Arrange them one or two inches apart from one another on an ungreased baking sheet (there is no need to butter or line the baking sheet).
Flatten the balls slightly with a fork or bottom of a floured juice glass, bake in a preheated 350F oven for around 10-12 mins until they are golden brown and somewhat firm on top.
Transfer to a cooling rack for around 15 mins before serving.
Variations
Add chocolate chips, nuts, candied fruit, sandwich two baked cookies with jam; the possibilities are limitless.
